How to Start an Online Business with a Blog?

I can still remember back when blogs started to become a thing. Back then, teens and young people created blogs to share their thoughts and feelings. But today, it’s one of the most popular ways to make money. Sure, bloggers still share their thoughts and feelings on their blogs, but for the most part, a blog is created with the goal of monetizing it. If you’re wondering how to start an online business with a blog, this guide is for you.how-to-start-an-online-business-with-a-blog

Selling your expertise

While blogs are certainly some of the best tools to make money online, it still requires some hard work on your part. The most successful bloggers are where they are right now because of their expertise.

If you’re interested in how to start an online business with a blog, you have to choose a niche that is “close to your heart” or at least something you’re willing to learn more about.

People turn to blogs to learn something new. Some even rely on blogs to know the latest happenings, so readers choose a blog that’s informative and engaging at the very least. If you want to be an effective blogger, you need to know what you’re talking about because people won’t read your blog if you’re just as clueless as they.

So what do you like to talk about? Makeup junkies can start a blog filled with product reviews or makeup tutorials. Fashionistas can blog about their outfits, style, and interesting fashion news. They may also feature snaps of their favorite runway looks or their own designs. Political analysts also get some good use of blogs, as they can easily pour their thoughts into a blog post and debate with others in the comments section.

Having a specific theme or topic for your blog is ideal, so you can be remembered as an expert of that specific area of interest. However, others also get to be successful in sharing various tidbits about their lives that they’re considered as “lifestyle” bloggers with more breadth.

In any case, your expertise is your product if you want to turn your blog to become a business. Being specific can help you out, but it can also limit you. Being general can be great, but make sure to still pinpoint specific areas of interest so you’ll be known for certain things as well.

How to start an online business with a blog?

Here’s a step by step guide:

#1 Start a blog

The first thing you need if you want to start an online business with a blog is to actually create a blog. It should have a memorable title, a readable layout, and most importantly, tons of quality content. It’s up to you if you want to have your own domain, but you can also use free blogging platforms as well. A lot of popular bloggers today started out with a free blog like BlogSpot, so there’s really no harm in following the same route.

#2 Boost your online presence

The hard work in becoming a blogger comes in the generation of traffic to your blog. You’ll want a lot of people to visit your page and read your entries so building an online presence is a must. Promote your blog on your social media pages. Make sure to link your blog to your profile pages, so you can easily redirect your followers to your website.

Attracting more followers should also be your priority. Quality posts can do the trick, but you should also remember to use popular hashtags and keywords. This way, those who are interested in what’s trending can easily find you and even extend to finding your blog.

Hosting online contests can also help you gain attention online. It’s better if you can already have a sponsored giveaway at the early days of your blog, but if you can’t, you can always invest on this and buy your own gifts for your followers. This is definitely an effective way to generate some buzz for your blog and with good content, you might even be able to sustain their interest and keep them as your followers.

#3 Build a network

Another way for you to generate some buzz for your website is by building a quality network. You can do this by joining forums on your niche and lending a helping hand to posters who have questions and queries about what you know best. You can also build your network through social media by being friends or professional contacts of other bloggers in your field.

Doing this will help you learn more about the industry. Being associated with a pro can also help you gain some popularity as well. Especially if you can work with them on a project, you can easily reach their followers without being too competitive about it.

Of course, having like-minded people surround you can also help you learn more about how you can profit more from your blog. Experts might give you a tip or two that will prove to be very useful in your endeavor.

#4 Launch your own online business

Once you have reached a decent number of followers, transitioning to an online business can now easily be done. You actually have a few options to do this:

  • Allow ads on your blog including banner ads or through advertorial posts. Companies pay you for advertising space or a promotional post
  • Launch your own brand. Create your own product and sell them through your blog. A lot of bloggers have done this through collaborations with manufacturers but you can also do it on your own by sourcing your own products
  • Sign up with WealthyAffiliate.com. Affiliate marketing is another lucrative way to turn your blog into an online money making empire. Many bloggers actually prefer this method as they don’t have to come up with an actual product or inventory with this method. All you need to do is to promote the products in your affiliate network and you earn a commission for each sale.

I hope one or two of these options can help you get started with making money online through your blog. Good luck! I have a blog based on UFO’s but I seem to be hitting a brick wall due to my competition – have you ever had this problem with your blog?
I’m wondering if there is some help out there somewhere – marketing aid that will help me bring in more visitors. Any ideas please?

    • Maxx Tan says:

Hi Chris, I’m curios what your blog about UFO? can explain further please?

First of all, there is always competition in our online world. This is what we can’t avoid but if I get you right what you means is based on keyword competition here? If you want more people to visit your blog then you have to do it right way. Keyword research is the main factor. I usually spend a lot of time in keyword research. Less competition equal to easy to rank. Once you keyword Rank, then this is time more visitors visiting your blog/post and become popular.

I hope this answered your question.

      Cheers and Thank you,

When I first started out making money online, it was all about finding places to post affiliate links. But these days, the internet has evolved so much, that blogging is now the way to build an online business. I think in 2016 and onwards, if we don’t have a blog, we are going to find it tough to build up an income. There is another option of using landing pages but it will take a lot of learning and a lot of money to create ads for those pages and promote affiliate products that way.

Blogging certainly requires hard work but it’s an awesome way to build your brand, get your name & face out there, help people, and earn an income. 🙂

I appreciate your 4 steps for starting an online business with a blog site, and Wealthy Affiliate sounds fantastic.

    • Maxx Tan says:

Blogging is easy and everyone could do it but we must treat it like own business. That’s why not many people can built and bring in income. Successful blogging is about building trust, brand and helping people with solution. Help people first with solution first and money will come naturally.

Thank you and All the success to you

Great post! I also remember when blogs were just about thoughts and feelings. They started to get annoying until people were making money off of them and had their own online business. Now they attract a lot of people, especially those that like to write.

I’ve been blogging for the last few months and find it very enjoyable. But I, unlike a lot of people, actually like to write. It’s a great way to connect with different people from all over the world.

What social media website would you recommend to post about a blog? Which one has worked best for you?

    Thank you!
