What Is Rodan and Fields?

Rodan and Fields is a marketing and a direct sales Multi Level Marketing (MLM) company, just like Amway. Founded by  Dr. Kathy Fields and Dr. Katie Rodan,  they specialize in skin care and anti-aging products. They are also the same names behind another successful product back in the 90s, the Pro-Activ solution.

Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?

Dr. Kathy Fields and Dr. Katie Rodan

Knowing that the owners of Rodan and Fields are also behind another successful product some couple of years ago, this suggests they know exactly what they are doing and are actually good  at it.

Rodan + Fields is a legitimate Multi-Level Marketing company. They also have a tangible product to offer their market, with benefits and all. Even if they are recruiting people to join their growing team of consultants, the core of their business is centered on making a sale.

But, of course, we need to delve deeper into this to find more meat so we can prove to ourselves really if Rodan and Fields is indeed a scam  that we should veer away from or not.

How to Get Started in Rodan and Fields?

As an MLM company, Rodan + Fields offer us two ways to earn. The amount of which will depend on how much work you are willing to put in after you join as a consultant.

1. First, you can sell any of their items as a retailer and earn via commission basis from your retail sales.

2. Second, you can also choose to invite and recruit other people to become one of your down lines

Is Rodan and Fields a scam?

A Rodan and Fields consultant/distributor unveiling a product to her prospect and buyer.

You can earn either way. You can also choose to do both. But it is not as quick and easy as it seems. There are qualifiers you need to know first.

Initially, you need to get first your  $45 Business Portfolio. This will serve as your consultant starter kit. Inclusive here are the DVD instructions and guide materials you will use.

Note that this starter package is inclusive only of the training materials. It doesn't come with any of the  products in offer.

Rodan + Fields Starter Packages

Aspiring R + F consultants need to select their starter kit.

Basically, there are 3 starter kits to choose from:

  • Personal Results Kit ($395)
  • Big Business Launch Kit ($695)
  • RFx Express Business Kit ($995)

Normally, new members opt for the $695 Big Business Launch Kit because this package comes with product samples and worksheets to use.

Would You Sell R + F Products Right Away?

Personally I would not take this route right away. Build your credibility first as an R + F product consultant. Try out the products yourself first to see  how things will turn out for you.

Your firsthand experience is the most valid proof to how effective and good the products really are.

I find this kind of deceptive in some way. We know we can't start or become successful in this line of business without having a firsthand experience on how effective their beauty enhancing products really are.

So people who are interested to join this MLM network are compelled to buy the products first even if there is no guarantee they will really like their items or continue with the opportunity.

Aside from that, you will need to incur $100 worth of monthly product purchases  in case you don't sell enough. This will help you qualify as an active consultant.

And only the active consultants are eligible for commissions.

Rodan + Fields product line

Rodan + Fields has a wide array of beauty and skin care products.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam?

If I want to scrutinize an alleged money-making product, I have a checklist to use to verify if they are good or not. Unfortunately, the vast majority of money-making machines I came across before are sheer scams.

These points below will help you distinguish a shady business opportunity from a legit company.

1. Check out their website and its level of security.
2. Do they have a dynamic and active community or group?
3. You should be able reach somebody from their support group or anyone from the internal team using the contact details they provided.

If you will visit an MLM company's official website, verify if they have incorporated the use SSL or security socket layer on their pages. This signifies that your connection to their servers is secure and encrypted. Hence, you are safe.

Check out their contact details. Are they really housed in the physical address they have on their website? Would you be able to reach someone using the phone number they have on their website? Would you receive a reply message after sending  a query to their support team’s dedicated email address?

I did. And all three conditions I mentioned above affirm to me that Rodan + Fields is not a scam company. Now, next in line is do they really have a community of followers supporting their brand? Yes.

Facebook is actually one of the social networks saturated with Rodan and Fields pages and groups. People here are passionate about the products and the business itself. Often they have thousands of followers and likes. Now, this is something we should expect from a business with a $627 million sales in 2015.

Rodan and Fields Social Media Presence

Rodan + Fields has countless numbers of Facebook pages and groups.

Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?

By virtue of definition of a Pyramid Scheme, it is a business model where members recruit others so they can become new members. They sign up to join the company. However, there is no solid product or service to sell.

The business model of Rodan + Fields is MLM. In this kind of business model, the company is relying on building a network of resellers or consultants. If you are consultant here, your referrals who signed-up will become your down line.

Another telltale sign that a company is a pyramid scheme is when they entice you to join using their "get rich fast" schemes. Or they can help turn your dollar to a hundredfold return.

Are we seeing that Rodan and Fields is solely relying on its members to recruit people to join the company? No, they are not. The bulk of their business operation is centered upon selling their products.

While members can invite others to join them in the business opportunity, they know they can only get paid from the sales made by their referrals and not from them joining and signing up.

To sum up, Rodan + Fields is not a pyramiding scheme nor a scam. It is true, though, that the business structure has a semblance to a pyramid scheme due to its up-lines and down-lines. However, how the business operates tells us otherwise.

The Ugly Truths Finally Revealed?

One disturbing truth why most people never achieve financial independence from MLM companies like Rodan + Fields has something to do with the business practices itself. It is deceptive in a way, and without discernment, it is impossible for you to see the possible pitfalls.

So even if you are the most persevering and hardworking person on the planet, if you choose to work for a company whose structure is primarily designed to help them earn more than for you to grow financially -- you are doomed still.

Let us now unfold the enigma why many people are not finding success after joining an MLM company like Rodan + Fields.

According to a study made by the Consumer Awareness Institute,

1. 50% of people joining MLM companies would drop out during their first year.
2. 90% of members leave the company before their 5th year comes.
3. 95% of the MLM members leave the company before their 10th year.

You will never hear these from their recruiters.  Instead, they would  use enticing words like “financial freedom” to lure you into joining the company.

Safety Concerns on R + F Products

Another point of concern about Rodan + Fields is product integrity. Are they safe to use?

Different users may have bodies that react differently to their products than others. When this happens, issues may arise.

The majority of users may have experienced nothing unusual. But some have experienced adverse effects on their bodies. Severe reactions on their bodies in form swelling and redness prompted these people to file legal action against Rodan + Fields last year.

We can't classify them as isolated cases, because not only a handful were affected. This puts into question the integrity of R + F products. Beyond any doubt, are they really safe to use?

If you are looking for ways and opportunities to earn money from the Internet, would you associate yourself to a company with a questionable reputation?

How I Make Money Online?

It is true that MLM companies allow you to earn good money, but this type of business model is not particularly designed to help you grow your finances. Their structure is designed for the company to earn so much more than you realize.

Becoming a member of an MLM network is not the best way to go if you are looking for the most practical and lucrative online money making opportunity.

  • You will not recruit or refer people to the business

It’s been a while around and I believe they’re not scam because there’s been a whole lot of testimonial to it. Even though you will have to sell their products too, which is one thing I feel I don’t like. They are recommended to earn from as a per time worker. Thank you for providing us the full detail and honest review.

    Have a nice day

    • Maxx Tan says:

Hey Salim, yes are not a scam but one thing for confirmed is you have to sell their products and involved in recruiting. This is how MLM scheme works.

  • Matiss says:

Hey, thank you for sharing, a notably interesting MLM business. Definitely profitable as I believe skin care and anti-aging products are through the roof now. At least I’ve seen a lot of hype around that on social media lately. Suddenly everyone wants to live forever.

I completely agree with your thoughts that it’s not the best business to start out in. I do consider those 700 bucks a huge investment for what you might actually not like. One probably should sniff it all out from the uplines before actually getting involved. However, I do believe it’s much different to have your own to test around and screw with and having some of the uplines you probably barely know, and thus you’re at the same time trying to not screw their stuff up too much.

Either way, just wanted to share my thoughts. I appreciate all the insights.

Cheers, and Have a Great One!

Thank you for the detailed post about Rodan and Fields. And more importantly how to evaluate future MLM that are scams or legitimate. One thing that I’m interested in is their sales cycle and how they get other people to sign up. I’m afraid that I just won’t convert people to stay.

I’m super interested in Wealthy Affiliate. That’s super interesting, I’m going to check it out.

  • ecpags74 says:

Thank you for this review of Rodan and Fields.  I have not heard of it before, but I have heard of Amway.  It seems to me that the company makes money by selling expensive product kits to its new consultants/sales people.  They are supposed to sell the products and recruit additional  consultants.  I had a difficult time with this when I went into Amway, and have been suspicious of these types of enterprises.

I agree that affiliate marketing is much better way to build a business than Multi Level Marketing.

    • Maxx Tan says:

Hi Ellen, I am glad Affiliate marketing is the better choice for you. Amway is no different from Rodan and Fields and both of them are MLM.

  • Cathy Cavarzan says:

Personally I tend to stay away from mlm’s but I was intrigued enough to read your well thought out article. I was impressed to find out that most of their business does relay on selling products instead of just getting more people to sign up. However and thank you for pointing this out the fact that you have to pay in order to make commissions is one of the main reasons I dont like mlm’s. Affiliate marketing is where it is at.if you want to make a great living get into affiliate marketing and WA has all the tools you need to succeed.

  • Alblue says:

Thank you for sharing your investigation about Rodan. My friend’s mom has entered Rodan MLM business and i was a bit annoyed how she diligently sell me that product and convincing me to become her downline. I want to scream ‘scam’, but after reading your review, I can see that this is indeed a legit MLM.

Maybe I should try to convince her to follow Wealthy Affiliate instead. On average, how long a person can achieve financial freedom with this training platform? Thank you.

    • Maxx Tan says:

Hi Alblue, indeed Affiliate Marketing is more convincing at least for me due to you are flexible to choose the niche you would like to expand. You give people about what you know and if the review helps and you earn that commission. Unlike MLM you have to hard sell on the specific products within the company.

Regards to the financial freedom number is really up to your individual. What I can say is the more you work on the business the faster you will achieve the number.

Let me know if you have more doubt.
