What Is WordPress For? Why You Should Use It To Build Your Website Instead?

If you’ve never tried building your own website before, you may not be familiar with WordPress. But for many of those who have an online business or make money online, WordPress has become a buzzword. So what is WordPress for exactly? Have you try to use it before?

In a Nutshell

WordPress is currently the most popular tool for building websites. It’s capable of making just about any kind of websites, such as a blog and even a full-featured e-commerce website.

Even if you’ve never built a site in your life, it’s not going to be a problem when you use WordPress. You don’t need any coding skills to make a professional-looking site and you can pick from the thousands of free site designs available.

Getting WordPress

WordPress runs online and there is nothing to install on your PC to be able to use it. You can update your website no matter where you are, as long as you have an Internet connection. You can even do it from your phone using WP mobile apps.

Best of all, WordPress is free.  And unlike other “free” website tools, you’re not locked into some service and you can pick any web hosting service you like as long as it’s compatible with WordPress.

Speaking of web hosting for WordPress, you can host your WP site in two ways: First you can go with WordPress.com which is a hosted type so you run your site on their official servers. The hosting itself is free as well. But the problem is you’ll have no access the themes and plugins.

The second option is WordPress.org which is self-hosted and you can pick your own web hosting account. You get full complete control over the functionality and design of your website.

Getting Started With WordPress

Before you can begin using WordPress.org you’ll need to have a hosting service. Install WordPress on your PC by subscribing to a service that is ready to host a WordPress site. Some of these are free, others are paid; and to be honest, you should go with a paid one, if you want quality services and features.

Next, you should pick a name for your website. By this time you should already have a few ideas in your head about what to name your site right?  If you don’t, check out articles online that can assist you in brainstorming ideas. In line with this, you need to do a very important step which is choosing your domain name. A domain name is your web address. You can register any domain name for an annual fee, as long as the name isn’t already taken. You may even be given a free domain registration by some web hosting services for the first year, and they will check to see if the domain is still available.

Now it’s time to create your website. WordPress has a particular theme as a default theme and you have the option to stick to it or change it to a new one. To view a directory of WordPress themes, just click Appearance, and then click Themes. Go to Add New to view a list of free WordPress themes.

To add a new theme, you can choose to install a third party theme or basically premium themes that can give you more variety and features.

You will need to install and activate various plugins to enhance your site’s features and functionalities. Akismet which protects your site from spam is already pre-installed in WP sites; and all you have to do is activate it. For other plugins, just go to Plugins and then click Add New.

Then it’s time to start adding Pages to your site. You’ll need at least a Homepage, About Page and a Contact Page. Some types of the website will also need a TOS page, Gallery, and others.

When you’re done with all that, you can then begin adding content to your WordPress site. Here’s an 8-minute tutorial to help you learn more about this.

Pros and Cons of WordPress

Here’s a rundown of the advantages and disadvantages of using WordPress:

1. Easy Content Updates –Basic sites can be set up to have very easy access to all text and images. There are also many ways to create custom modules and anyone with basic computer skills can do it.

2. SEO Integration – To improve your website’s ranking in search engines, you’ll need SEO and WordPress has SEO plug-ins that can be set up quickly. With these plugins, you can have SEO additions to each page, such as the Meta Title & Description as well as H1 tags.

3. E-commerce Options – You can also use plug-ins created for e-commerce to allow for cart processing and ordering.

4. Mobile Websites – These days people are browsing the Web from their phone so having a platform that can build sites that are compatible with mobile screens is important. With WordPress, you can pick a responsive theme to ensure users on any device all receive a positive experience when browsing on your site.

5. Built-In Blogging Features –Blogging is still at the core of WordPress and maintaining a basic blog with this platform is simple and intuitive.

most amazing things about WordPress is that anyone can contribute to the source code that makes the platform better.

But it’s not without any drawbacks. Users may find that customizing the layouts and themes can prove difficult especially if you’ve never done this before.

You’ll also need to regularly update the software as various updates and patches come up all the time to keep hackers at bay and provide improvements to themes.

Lastly, it seems like everyone’s websites look the same. Lots of people and companies use WordPress so the sites look similar to each other even though there are thousands of themes to choose from.

If you’re new to website building and you don’t know a thing about coding and design, WordPress is a good option. However, because of a large number of WordPress websites online, you can’t really expect that you won’t find other sites that look like yours on the Web.
